According to Neighbor.com, the most neighborly city in the U.S. is Rochester, New York.

On National Neighbor Day, for its third annual “Most Neighborly Cities in America,” the nationwide neighborhood storage company revealed its top 25 cities for 2022.

Neighbor based the rankings for their list on key data points for each metro:

  • Charitable donations
  • Volunteering
  • Happiness (of residents)

Respondents ranked their city on these and other neighborly characteristics. This year, Neighbor.com set out to investigate how cities may have changed since the start of the pandemic and whether these new challenges have reunited and strengthened communities.

This year’s list revealed some of what they learned.

What does it mean to be “neighborly”?

Each year, Neighbor.com bases its rankings on a variety of publicly available data related to each city’s charitable giving and generosity and the well-being and happiness of its residents. It also considers other factors believed to contribute to a city’s overall neighborliness.

This year’s ranking relied on the same factors. But for the first time, Neighbor.com also surveyed Americans about their neighborly habits, their relationships with neighbors, and what they believe makes a community neighborly.

According to the survey, more Americans are doing these things in 2022:

  • Spending more time with neighbors and local friends. With higher prices at the pump and the rising cost of travel, around 30% of survey respondents say they’re hanging out with local friends and neighbors more than they used to.
  • Helping out neighbors and supporting local businesses. After more than two years of restrictive pandemic conditions and a rough economy, 42.5% of survey respondents are more willing to lend a hand to their neighbor, and 41% choose to support small, local businesses over national chains.
  • Looking beyond politics. Despite a significant and polarizing election this year (midterms), 45% of respondents choose to be neighborly regardless of different political affiliations.

We love recognizing and celebrating ‘Neighborly Cities,’ especially during this polarizing election season. The need for connection is a fundamental human need and is the foundation of a functioning society. So many societal problems can be tackled if we simply get to know our neighbors better and care more about them. One of the marvelous things about a community is that it enables us to connect with and help people in a way we couldn’t as individuals.

What makes Rochester #1?

Consistently ranking at the top for neighborly acts, volunteering, charitable giving, and overall happiness, Rochester, NY, “The Flower City,” climbed up from its #2 spot last year to #1 in 2022.

Rochester ranked third overall for neighborly acts and fourth for volunteering. It also earned high scores for charitable giving and the happiness of its residents.

It’s a city that offers beauty, variety, and plenty of ways to give back. Rochester locals know their beloved city as a place where residents never hesitate to lend a helping hand to their neighbors.

Rochester is also home to Art Park, distinguished as the only state park in the country dedicated to visual and performing arts.

When Rochester ranked #2 last year, Don Jeffries, President and CEO of Visit Rochester, had this to say:

One of the things we often hear from visitors is how welcoming and friendly Rochesterians are. This ranking is well-deserved and captures the warm welcome visitors can expect when they visit Greater Rochester.

With its rise to the #1 spot on the list, Rochester’s mayor added the following:

What a bright spot to be ranked the number-one most neighborly city in America. Like many other cities across the country, Rochester has its share of struggles, but this recognition is a testament to our residents’ generosity, kindness, and volunteerism and reminds us that together, we make our city a great place to live.

What can you do?

Aside from playing up the neighborly virtues of your own geographical farm < *** link to “6 Things an Agent Can Do to Build a Geographical Farm” *** >, there are things you can do to make your area more neighborly – and start a wave effect.

Make a list of neighborly resources for clients looking to move to the area, as well as any events that could help them learn more about the area and its resources for new residents. If any of your clients are moving to a more affordable property in the area, you can share a list of low- or no-cost resources to help make the transition as smooth and affordable as possible for them.

Be the kind of neighbor you’d love to meet and do business with. And make it a priority to step up and serve your community in some way, especially when disaster strikes.
